Vera Sergeevna Kostrovitskaya is the artist's wife, ballet dancer and teacher of classical dance. The work was donated to D. D. Shostakovich during a visit to the composer by the author in Moscow in the mid-1960s.

The painting was presented to D. D. Shostakovich by the author in 1947 for a housewarming in the composer's apartment on Mozhaisk highway (now Kutuzovsky Prospekt). The artist lived next door, one floor above.

June 25, 1958 Shostakovich became the hero of the solemn ceremony - dedication to the title of Honorary Doctor of Music of the University of Oxford (England).

The sculptural portrait was made or repeated by the author from the portrait of Beethoven, created by Glikman in Leningrad in 1939. The sculpture was presented by the author to Shostakovich in the early 1970s, before Glikman's emigration. Beethoven is one of Dmitri Shostakovich's favorite composers.
