The whereabouts of the author’s manuscript is unknown.
The music was written in 1971 and intended for Intervision—a large-scale international television organisation established in 1960 for exchanging programmes among the participating countries.
The Intervision Fanfares were first heard in March 1971 on USSR national television on the eve of the opening of the 24th CSPU Congress held in Moscow from 30 March to 9 April. The score was first published in Volume 42 of Shostakovich’s Collected Works (Muzyka Publishers, Moscow, 1987).
