Spring, spring... to Words by Alexander Pushkin
For Bass and Piano
The romance was written in 1967 and was Shostakovich’s last composition on a poem by Alexander Pushkin. There is no exact date of when the sketch of the romance and the author’s manuscript of the piano score were done; the composer only wrote the number of his opus—128.
The premiere of this composition was held on 23 November 1979 in the Small Hall of the Leningrad Philharmonic, after Shostakovich’s death. The romance was performed by Yevgeni Nesterenko and Mikhail Yermolayev. The first edition of the romance came out in 1984 in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Collected Works (Vol. 33, Muzyka Publishers, Moscow).
