Suite No. 1 for Jazz Orchestra
Sans op.
This publication is based on the 1945 edition—D. Shostakovich, Jazz Suite No. 1. Piano Score, Music Foundation of the Soviet Union (adaptation by Levon Atovmyan).
Collation with the score published in 2006 (see: D. Shostakovich, New Collected Works, in 150 vols., Vol. 32, DSCH, Moscow) reveals that, with respect to many of its fragments, this adaptation, which belongs to the concerto genre, is an inaccurate and very free re-arrangement, which often departs from the original notation, while No. 2 (“Polka”) even includes an additional 25-bar episode featuring music that does not appear in Shostakovich.
This edition has been brought into correspondence with the score—the necessary corrections have been made to the first and third movements, while the second movement appears in a new arrangement done by the present editor.
A description of the manuscript sources of Suite No. 1 appears in D. Shostakovich, New Collected Works, in 150 vols., Vol. 32, DSCH, Moscow, 2006 (Appendix II: M. Iakubov, Rough Drafts of Suites No. 1 and No. 2 for Jazz Orchestra, pp. 179-203).
Suite No. 2 for Jazz Orchestra
Sans op.
This publication is based on the author’s manuscript (arrangement for piano) kept in RNMM, rec. gr. 32, f. 282. It is a rough draft with unfinished and missing staves, with various abbreviations, without dynamic designations or articulation marks. The published piano score is brought into correspondence with the orchestral transcription of the Suite done by Gerard McBurney by the present editor—D. Shostakovich, New Collected Works, in 150 vols., Vol. 32, DSCH, Moscow, 2006.
A description of the draft author’s manuscript of Suite No. 2 is published in D. Shostakovich, New Collected Works, in 150 vols., Vol. 32, DSCH, Moscow, 2006 (Appendix II: M. Iakubov, Rough Drafts of Suites No. 1 and No. 2 for Jazz Orchestra, pp. 179-203).

In 1966, Genrikh Kovalev did an arrangement for male choir accompanied by piano (words by Kira Alemasova). Published in Appendix I of this edition from: D. Shostakovich, Collected Works, in 42 vols., Vol. 34, Moscow, 1985 (Appendix, pp. 197-199).
