Robert Schumann. Cello Concerto
New Orchestration by Dmitri Shostakovich
Op. 125

This publication is based on the 1966 edition—Moscow, Muzyka. The whereabouts of the author’s manuscript are unknown, but there is a handwritten copy done by the copyist, apparently based on the author’s manuscript, kept in the Russian National Museum of Music (RNMM), rec. gr. 32, f. 1689. The cello part is given in Mstislav Rostropovich’s version (in accordance with the 1966 edition). In the German editions and in the handwritten copy of the Concerto, the tempo instructions are written in German. This edition is printed in accordance with the Russian edition (with Italian terminology).

New Orchestration by Dmitri Shostakovich

This publication is based on the author’s manuscript of the orchestration in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Archive, rec. gr. 1, inv. 1, f. 340. The original orchestration by Boris Tishchenko, published in 1968—B. Tishchenko. Concerto for Solo Cello, Seventeen Wind Instruments, Percussion and Harmonium—is also taken into consideration, Leningrad, Muzyka. The cello part is published in Mstislav Rostropovich’s version in keeping with its printed edition (the cello part in his score was sketchily notated by the author of the orchestration; bowings, slurs, accents and dynamic notes are often missing; all of these discrepancies are not stipulated).
