“The Unforgettable Year 1919”. Op. 89

   This publication is based on the author’s manuscript kept in RNMM, rec. gr. 32, f. 107, verified with the film’s soundtrack. The author’s manuscript does not always correspond to the way the music actually sounds in the film—some of the items have been cut, some fragments of items are repeated in different places in the film, and there are also items missing from the soundtrack. The sequence of the items in this edition follows the order of their appearance in the film.
   In 1955, Muzgiz Publishers put out a publication called Fragments of Music to the Film The Unforgettable Year 1919 (compiled by Levon Atovmyan), which is comprised of many revised and re-instrumented fragments of Shostakovich’s music. Two items—Nos. 11 and 15—were included in a publication called Fragments of Music to the Film Trilogy about Maxim (Sovetskiy kompozitor Publishers, Moscow, 1961, compiled by Levon Atovmyan), titled “Demonstration” and “Introduction”.
  Appendix I contains additional Items of the music to the film The Unforgettable Year 1919 that do not feature in the soundtrack.
